Pancultural Medium radio show archives now available

by everyman on Dec.06, 2007, under Art

Radio Freedom was (and apparently still is) a webcasting radio station in the United Kingdom. I started a show with them in 2002 called “The Pancultural Medium” (a term coined by Paul Ryan, who I’ve been friends with since college.)

It was performed entirely from my livingroom studio each week, often while I was drinking and smoking, using DJ equipment, instruments, effects boxes, microphones, computers, samplers, more than I can recall.

It was the first time I worked 100% independent from Press The Button since I moved to Cleveland. I very much enjoyed the lack of FCC restrictions, and took full advantage of the unique freedoms webcasting allowed. Due to my working alone … and without broadcast restrictions, I was less inhibited with my technique, not concerned with artistic compromises.

I recently found several Pancultural Medium archives recorded in their entirety, and thought they might be of interest to anyone reading this blog. If you’d like to hear them, you can find them all on my Downloads page.

For nostalgia’s sake (and those seeking specifics), here is a copy/paste of my radio show’s description written in 2003 from the Press The Button site:

What is it?
It is hard to describe, since no two weeks have ever been the same. It is a one hour freeform experimental found sound collage program that is performed entirely live by everyman, using several sources of audio, not limited to DJ gear. It can be similar to Press The Button, but there are no themes or FCC restrictions, and more interaction with the listeners thanks to the Radio Freedom chat room. It is encouraged you join the chat room while you listen, as the content is sometimes based on conversation.
